BY TRAIN
A great experience is to go to Mongolia by Transsiberian Railway. This legendary train from Moscow to Vladivostok has a second branch connecting Beijing over a length of 7660 km. It goes through the Mongolian capital, enabling every year to many backpackers to go to Mongolia.
The Transsiberian Railway is the Transmongolian as you cross the Mongolian border. It takes about five days and fifteen stops to go from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar.
A train ticket in second class costs around 200 euros – around 260 dollars - (one compartment for 4) from Ulaanbaatar to Moscou.
Good to know : the prices are really higher from Moscou to Beijing than from Beijing to Moscou !
A Russian transit visa is required but is easily obtained by showing the train ticket. But it only takes into account the way, no extended outage is therefore possible without a visa extension.
As for tickets, the place is becoming limited in the summer so it is better to book in advance.
