The best of Mongolia resume in a 12 days journey!!! Naadam is celebrated in Mongolia each year on 11 July in Ulaanbaatar. “Eriin gurvan naadam” or the three manly games of wrestling, horse racing, and archery make up the core activities of the national festival. Before or after this celebration you will visit beauties of Mongolia: horseride in Terelj National Park, discover Przewalski wild hosrses, camel ride in the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai, visit Kharkhorin the ancient capital of Mongolia, discover nomads quotidian life in Orkhon valley, and visit Olgii lake.
STEP 1 - ULAANBAATAR, CITY TOUR : Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia (called UB). You will be met by your guide and driver and transferred to Dream hotel, a 2 star establishment that’s conveniently located in downtown UB within walking distance from major attractions in the city. Depending on your arrival time, your guide will accompany you around this ‘soviet-esque’ city that offers some rich cultural attractions and museums. You will first head for Gandantegchinlen, a Tibetan-style monastery with 150 monks in residence. This is one of the very few monasteries which escaped the massive destruction during the communist period in the 1930s. The monks in residence usually pray in the morning, a ceremony open to visitors. The Buddhist Centre will be also ready to answer any of your questions. You will then visit a cashmere factory, one of Mongolia’s best known exports. This will be followed by lunch in a local restaurant to work your taste buds on Mongolian cuisine. In the afternoon, you will visit the National History Museum where three floors Mongolia’s rich and glorious past await you - from pre-historical ages to the soviet era without forgetting the glories of Genghis Khan’s period of reign. You will then head for our office to collect details of your trip: the itinerary, advice and to address any doubts or questions. At 6 pm, the Tumen Ekh traditional show will provide an exposé on traditional Mongolian folk arts including folklore dances, contortionism and Khoomi - the famous overtone singing style. PICK UP AT THE AIPORT LUNCH IN A RESTAURANT, DINNER NOT INCLUDED, OVERNIGHT IN AN HOTEL.
STEP 2 - ULAANBAATAR - TERELJ NATIONAL PARK : By jeep, you will leave the hectic capital city for Gorkhi-Terelj national park. Not far from capital city, Terelj offers a perfect spot for hiking with fascinating rocks and cliffs, pine forested mountains and green flowery valleys marked with lovely rivers and lakes. After a stop at the Turtle Rock named after the shape caused by natural erosion, you will visit the Guurtein monastery which is perched on a mountain top. After the Lunch, on horseback you will go deeper into the park to discover more of its fabulous rivers, steppes, grassy meadows and forest patches BREAKFAST IN HOTEL, LUNCH AND DINNER AND OVERNIGHT WITH A FAMILY, IN A GER FOR GUESTS JEEP : 2 HOURS HORSE RIDING : 3 HOURS
STEP 3 - TERELJ NATIONAL PARK - KHUSTAÏ NATIONAL PARK : You will be driven to Khustai National Park, around 100 km west of Ulaanbaatar, the last bastion of the only undomesticated wild horse species. Prezwalksi’s horses were once hunted to near extinction in the 1920’s by the Russians. Thankfully 15 were captured in 1900 and brought to Netherlands. In 1945, 31 horses were bred in captivity of which 9 were later reintroduced to their native habitat in Khustai. Today 1500 wild horses roam the park. STEP 4 - KHUSTAÏ - KHOGNO KHAN NATIONAL PARK : We are leaving Khustai national park to Khogno Khaan. With its splendid rocks, semi-arid steppes and sand dunes, Khogno Khan is also referred to as the ‘mini Gobi’. Here you will have lunch in Eden teepees camp. During the afternoon we will go by walk to Erdene Khambiin Hiid Monastery. The “Monasterey of the monk Erdene” was build during the XVIIe century. STEP 5 - KHOGNO KHAN - KHARKHORIN : After a nice breakfast at the camp we will leave for a camel ride to the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai. Lunch in the camp, then departure to Kharkhorin. The legendary city of Genghis Khan was established in 1220 along the Ancient Silk Road. It remained Mongolia’s capital city until Kubilai Khan later moved it to Beijing though the ruins of the great city still remain today. After this you will visit Erdene Zuu monastery which was built in 1586 by a nomad prince. The monastery has been built with inspiration from China and Tibet and is surrounded by 108 sacred stupas. STEP 6 - KHARKHORIN - ORKHON VALLEY : After breakfast in the camp, you will be driven to Orkhon in the Khangai mountain range which offers beautiful landscapes of gorges and green steppes. Experience Mongolian hospitality with a nomadic family who will host you for two nights Visits Orkhon waterfalls, the Ulan Tsutgalaan. Formed more than 20,000 years ago by a rare combination of earthquakes and volcanic activity, these 16 meters high waterfalls are simply magical. Spend time taking in the white shimmering mass of water crashing on black stone and splashing a rainbow of colors with the sun. In the evening, pitch in to help prepare and feast on ‘Horhog', also called mongol barbecue, a traditional Mongolian stewed meat dish. STEP 7 - ORKHON VALLEY- TOVKHON - TSENKHER HOT SPRINGS : We leave our hosts in direction to Tsenkher hot spring. You will be driven to Orkhon in the Khangai mountain range which offers beautiful landscapes of gorges and green steppes. You will then leave the main track for a small mountainous trail which leads to Tovkhon monastery. Perched on top of the mountain, the monastery is only reachable on foot. Zanabazar, the first religious leader in Mongolia, composed the Soyombo script here. The Soyombo symbol from the script is the national symbol of Mongolia and can be seen on the Mongolian flag. At 2312 meters high, the monastery offers stupendous views of the Khangai mountain range. WESTERN BREAKFAST, LUNCH ON THE WAY, DINNER AND OVERNIGHT IN A GERS CAMP JEEP : 4 HOURS HIKE : 2 HOURS
STEP 8 - TSENKHER HOT SPRINGS - OGII LAKE : Last bath before going to Ogii lac. In the middle of the steppe, this little fishing lac is also an attraction for migrators birds. BREAKFAST IN THE CAMP, LUNCH ON THE WAY, DINNER AND OVERNIGHT IN A GERS CAMP JEEP : 5 HOURS
STEP 9 - OGII LAKE - ULAANBAATAR : Last day of road before coming back to Ulaanbaatar. Last horse herds crossing the tracks, last gers smoking further, the steppe will follow us until the last minute. Transfer to your Hotel where you can rest a little. STEP 10 - ULAANBAATAR, NAADAM : The Mongolian national holiday Naadam is celebrated in Mongolia each year on 11 July in Ulaanbaatar. “Eriin gurvan naadam” or the three manly games of wrestling, horse racing, and archery make up the core activities of the national festival. During all the festivities everything is closed, and numerous ceremonies take place. Nadaam take place every year between the 11th and the 12th at Ulaanbaatar. In countryside its depend but always around this date. During this first day, you will see the opening ceremony, then the wrestling one of the three manly games. The first part of the wrestling is th emost interesting for someone who doesn’t know so much about it. During this part light wrestler are fighing with heavy one as it doesn’t exist any category of weight in Mongol wrestling. STEP 11 - ULAANBAATAR, NAADAM : Early in the morning we will go to Khuin Doloon Khudag to assist at the horse ride heats. Mongols train there horses to win Naadam Ulaanbaatar games. 6 races are separately held, the first one with 2 years old horses and so on up to the horses of 6 years. The length of the race varies according to the age of horses: 10 km for the 2-year-old foals, 28 km for the 6 years old stallions. During certain races, more than 700 horses take part at first. The riders are of young children from 6 to 8 years old. After the race, we shall return to the stadium where we can observe the archery. STEP 12 - DEPARTURE : Breakfast at the hotel. Return transfer can take place at the desired time, depending on your flight time.
